William A. Kunkle, DO

Primary Specialty:
Adult Spine Surgery

Dr. Kunkle received his Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science from Indiana University. Before his sophomore year in college, he worked in a community hospital learning the behind the scenes management and flow of the operating room. Prior to attending medical school Dr. Kunkle worked as a patient care technician in a Medical/Coronary intensive care unit. While working in the hospital he learned the importance of family communication and their involvement in complex medical decisions. He applies this thought process when determining the plan of care for all of his spine patients. He then moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he attended medical school.

Dr. Kunkle completed his orthopaedic residency at one of the busiest orthopaedic trauma centers in the country, Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. While at Broward Health, he was appointed Chief Orthopaedic Resident and had the ability to train with highly recognized orthopedic and neurosurgical spine surgeons.

Following residency, Dr. Kunkle completed a combined Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery Spine fellowship in Adult Spinal Deformity and Reconstruction at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon. During his fellowship he was instructed in both surgical and non-operative management of complex spinal conditions.

Dr. Kunkle has maintained a strong interest in advancing the field of spine surgery throughout his career. He has authored multiple articles on various spinal pathologies and was the first to publish a validation study using smartphone (iPhone) protractors to measure angles on spinal deformity x-rays. Dr. Kunkle has presented his research at multiple meetings, including the largest international spine conference NASS (North American Spine Society).

Dr. Kunkle strives to achieve pain relief for all of his patients. In each instance he attempts the least invasive option first. When non-operative treatment is not affective Dr. Kunkle is prepared to offer the least invasive and most advanced surgical procedures and technology to treat the spinal pathology when surgery is indicated.

Dr. Kunkle has a particular interest in adult deformity and degenerative spinal conditions, spine trauma, motion preserving technology such as total cervical disc replacement, percutaneous kyphoplasty vertebral body augmentation of compression fractures, and minimally invasive treatment of spinal disorders.

Dr. Kunkle understands the importance of helping patients understand their symptoms and involving them in their treatment options to make well-informed decisions. He believes in the importance of physical fitness, diet and emotional happiness as they play an important role in the patients’ spine and overall health. Although surgery may be required in some conditions, Dr. Kunkle is committed to exhausting all non-operative methods, modalities and preoperative optimization prior to surgical intervention.

Dr. Kunkle’s goal as a spine surgeon is to provide high quality evidenced based spine care with proven results. Dr. Kunkle draws from his previous hospital positions to provide compassionate and caring treatment to improve the quality of life of his patients through excellent spine skill and understanding.
