Dr. Paul Kerner is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon for the EmergeOrtho—Triangle Region Foot and Ankle and Sports Medicine Teams. He has been with EmergeOrtho since 2008 and is one of the few surgeons in the Triangle Area to have fellowship training in two orthopedic subspecialties. Dr. Kerner strives to provide the highest quality, subspecialty orthopedic care for competitive athletes and active individuals, utilizing both conservative and surgical approaches to meet their specific needs. 

Education and Expertise

After completing his residency at MCP/Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, Dr. Kerner completed a comprehensive Sports Medicine/Knee and Shoulder Reconstruction Fellowship at the Insall Scott Kelly® (ISK) Institute in New York. At ISK, he trained under and assisted the team physicians for the New York Yankees, New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets, and New York Liberty.

In the four years following ISK, Dr. Kerner practiced in the Capital District of Upstate New York. From 2007 to 2008, Dr. Kerner completed the Foot and Ankle Fellowship at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he gained expertise in reconstructive, traumatic, and sports injuries to the foot and ankle.

Since moving to the Triangle region in 2008, Dr. Kerner has been the team physician for several Wake County High Schools. He is an Orthopedic Consultant to Campbell University and The Durham Bulls. He is currently the team physician for the USA Men’s U-19 National Lacrosse Team.

Dr. Kerner’s multidisciplinary training in sports injuries, trauma, and reconstructive procedures targeted to the foot, ankle, knee, and shoulder place him in a unique position to offer comprehensive orthopedic care. This includes addressing the following injuries and conditions:

Whenever possible, Dr. Kerner treats the injuries and conditions above (and others) utilizing conservative treatment methods. If a diagnosis is severe or does not respond well to non-surgical approaches, Dr. Kerner performs surgery using both open and minimally-invasive, arthroscopic techniques.

Community Connections

Dr. Kerner is active in coaching youth lacrosse at the rec and travel club level. He is married to Dr. Nicole Kerner, a practicing OB/GYN at Duke University, and he has three children: Benjamin, Adrianna, and Zachary.
