Dr. Takenaga attended the University of California, Los Angeles, where he studied Business Economics. After two years in the business world, he pursued a Masters degree in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics from Biola University in La Mirada, CA, and then started a Ph.D in Philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin. A passion to serve those in need prompted him to leave academic philosophy and pursue a career in medicine. He graduated from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and then completed orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. During residency Dr. Takenaga performed research, published articles, and presented at meetings on topics such as fragility fractures and the long-term outcomes of total hip arthroplasty.

Prior to joining Triangle Orthopaedics, now EmergeOrtho, Dr. Takenaga practiced orthopaedic surgery in Toledo, Ohio. He enjoys working with patients with general orthopaedic problems and has developed broad clinical interests and experience. This includes sports medicine, with an emphasis on arthroscopic techniques, such as ACL reconstruction, meniscus surgery, and rotator cuff and labral repair. It also includes joint replacement surgery, focusing on hip, knee and shoulder replacements. He also performs common hand procedures, such as carpal tunnel and trigger finger releases, tendon repair, and treats fractures of the upper and lower extremities. Dr. Takenaga’s patients and their family members are regularly impressed with his caring nature and excellent bedside manner. His compassion and empathy, combined with knowledge of operative and non-operative treatment options, make him well equipped to treat patients’ comprehensive musculoskeletal issues. He strives to work together with patients to help them achieve an active lifestyle and improved quality of life.

Dr. Takenaga resides in Durham with his wife, Nancy, and their son Dylan and two daughters, Sophie and Lizzy. They enjoy youth sports, camping, the Carolina beaches, and exploring local eateries and attractions. Together, they have also gone on medical mission trips to Kijabe, Kenya and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS:

"FEEL LIKE FAMILY!"
I was very impressed by how quickly I was able to get an appointment, the level of care received, and the ease of access after the appointment to answer questions. Dr. Takenaga and his staff made me feel like family.

"THE BEST!"
The professionalism of all the staff, including physical therapy, was of the highest quality. Dr. Takenaga was such a personal, caring, and informative physician that I have ever encountered. They were the best!

"PROMPT AND THOROUGH - GOES THE EXTRA MILE"
Excellent carpal tunnel release surgeon. Dr. Takenaga is prompt and very thorough with his exams. He does not rush during your visit. He makes sure that his patients understand what their particular medical issue is and what can be done to help. He does not push you to have surgery and will give other treatment options that may help. If surgery is needed, he will go the extra mile to explain in detail why it is needed and what the end results should be.

"VERY KNOWLEDGABLE"
Dr. Takenaga is very knowledgeable and has a very nice bedside manner. He is very concerned about your health before, during and after your surgery. If I have another issue, I'll be contacting him again.

"HIGHLY RECOMMENDED"
I've only known Dr. Takenaga against for a short period of time and I am very pleased and satisfied with the surgery he did for me. I was in a lot of pain and he worked very fast and quickly with me to talk with me and perform my surgery. I am greatly appreciated and I thank God for him. He is a blessing. I will recommended him to anyone.

"TRULY CARES ABOUT HIS PATIENTS"
There are so many great things that myself and my husband could say about Dr. Takenaga. My husband had tennis elbow really bad to the point it was unbearable. He was terrified about surgery but after meeting and speaking with Dr. T he agreed to have the surgery. Dr. T sat down and explained all that would be done in operating room and his recovery. His bedside manners are absolutely phenomenal he truly cares about his patients. If an issue arises the doctor himself will call you. Thank you Dr. T.

"GREAT!"
I would recommend Dr. Takenaga for surgery on the knee (meniscus tear) I found his bedside manner to be both professional and thorough. After an MRI my surgery was scheduled quickly and follow-up was very helpful! The entire staff at Triangle Orthopaedics was great!

"EXCELLENT BEDSIDE MANNER!"
Excellent Dr. listens and understands and treats you as if he is truly concerned. Excellent bedside. My surgery on my right knee wen great and he has really followed through with me... I am not a good listener and do not know when to stay down and rest, but he has walked me through it. I highly recommend him.

"EXPERTISE, SKILL, AND ELAN"
After having my left hip replaced in 2008 with less than stellar results, I was very lucky to meet Ryan Takenaga through my insurance person. He replaced my right one with expertise, skill and elan. My chronic and acute pain is now an ugly memory. I recommend Dr. Takenaga to anyone with no reservations whatsoever.
