Rheumatology is the subspecialty of internal medicine for the diagnosis and treatment of arthritis and other inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Because of dramatic improvements in our understanding of the best treatment strategies and numerous new therapies available over the past decade, treatment of arthritis and related conditions is more effective, yet more complicated than ever before. Due to the nature of rheumatic disorders, personalized medical treatment by an experienced rheumatologist is very important. The TOA Rheumatology team includes seven board certified rheumatologists with the support of all on-site TOA resources such as physical and occupational therapy, orthopaedic surgery, rehabilitation, laboratory services, infusion facilities for intravenous medications, and state of the art imaging such as x-ray, CT, MRI, and bone density testing. This combination of personalized and comprehensive care provides the greatest potential for the best possible outcomes from arthritis treatment.

Common Rheumatic Conditions:

Clinical Research Program

In addition to standard care, we have an active clinical research program including clinical trials of new medications under study for rheumatic diseases. We have participated in clinical trials of most of the rheumatoid arthritis medications that have become available over the past 20 years including Enbrel, Humira, Orencia, Rituxan, Kineret, Actemra, and Cimzia as well as the major anti-inflammatory medications. We have also collaborated with researchers at Duke University and the University of North Carolina's Thurston Arthritis Research Center. In our opinion, the availability of clinical trials is a major resource for our patients allowing them access to cutting edge therapies when established medications are not satisfactory. Our participation also keeps us at the forefront of the newest advances in rheumatology. If you are interested in participating in a clinical trial, please contact us.
