Dr. Toohey attended undergraduate and medical school in her native state of Nebraska. She completed a B.S. degree at Creighton University and later earned a medical degree at the University of Nebraska Medical center. After completing an internship at University of Nebraska Affiliated Hospitals, she went on to fulfill her residency there too. Dr. Toohey is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
In the early days of her career, Dr. Toohey worked as a General Internist, and then acquired an academic role as Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia. She later completed a fellowship in the subspecialty of Rheumatology at Duke University Medical Center.
In 1993, Dr. Toohey joined Durham Rheumatology, where she dedicated nearly two decades of her career. Durham Rheumatology now operates as TOA Rheumatology where she continues treating patients at the main campus in Durham.
