One of the most common causes of disability is lower back pain. If the pain comes from discs in the lumbar spine, an artificial disc replacement may be one surgical option. Discs in the spine can become worn overtime or injured in an accident and cause significant pain. Artificial discs are made to mimic a natural disc in size and function. The surgeon removes the damaged and diseased disc and bone spurs surrounding it, and places the artificial disc in its place. This surgery was first FDA approved in 2004 and has been successful in relieving lower back pain in properly selected patients who have not had sufficient pain relief with long-term non-surgical treatments.
