A Lisfranc, or midfoot, injury occurs if there are broken bones or torn ligaments in the midfoot from a twist, fall, or more severe incident. The midfoot is most important in stabilizing the arch of the foot and walking so this type of sprain or fracture is serious and in most cases requires surgery.
Nonsurgical treatment can help with a Lisfranc sprain that does not involve a dislocation, fracture, or torn ligaments but if the injury does, surgery is needed to realign the joints and repair the broken bone. An internal fixation is a procedure in which the surgeon correctly positions the bones and places screws or plates to hold the bones in place. If the damage to the midfoot cannot be repaired with screws or plates, fusion may be required to fuse the damaged bones so they heal as one. Following surgery, the patient's foot will need to be placed in durable medical equipment to keep the patient from bearing weight on the foot as it heals.
