One of the causes for back pain are fractures of the spinal vertebrae. These bones can become weak with age, especially for people with osteoporosis. When the bones are brittle, they more easily can be fractured, even from just performing daily activities. These spinal compression fractures can affect posture and cause back pain. A kyphoplasty or a vertebroplasty can be performed to relieve pain in these situations.
For a kyphoplasty, the surgeon makes a small incision to insert an instrument that drills a small channel in the vertebra. Then, an inflatable balloon is put in the channel and when inflated, it makes a cavity inside the vertebra. After the balloon is deflated, the cavity is then filled with bone cement to stabilize the spinal fracture. This surgery is appropriate for recent vertebral fractures that are causing significant pain despite non-surgical treatments. In many cases, patients experience relief of their pain within hours of the surgery.
Often older patients ignore back pain after minor trauma because they blame it on age or arthritis, but this pain could be from a spinal compression fracture.
