The CARES Lumbar Artificial Disc Registry is a study being done to assess use of lumbar total disc replacement (TDR).  TDR use will be studied at a large number of hospitals.  In earlier two-year studies TDR was compared to fusion of the spine.  These studies showed the success rate for TDR was at least as good as fusion of the spine. They showed it is safe and effective compared to fusion for treating select patients.
