North Carolina Specialty Hospital
- For Your Comfort

  WORKING TOGETHER

Together we can work to relive your pain and discomfort.  One of the most important things you can do is tell us about your pain.  We don’t always know when you are in pain.  Only you know when you are in pain, how bad the pain is and what it feels like.

You are not bothering us when you tell us about your pain, and you are not a complainer.  In fact, you are helping us to help you.

At North Carolina Specialty Hospital, our patients are our number one priority.  Your comfort and satisfaction are very important to us.  We are committed to trying to relieve your pain while you are here.

You are an important member of your healthcare team.  As this brochure explains, we will ask you often about your comfort and any pain you may be experiencing.  Together we can work to manage your pain!!

MANAGING PAIN

The team at NCSH knows that with good pain control, you will eat, sleep and heal faster while you are in the hospital and once you are home.

While you are here, our healthcare team will ask you frequently about your pain.

We will ask you to rate your pain on a 0-10 scale, with 0 being “no pain” to 10 being the “worst pain you could ever imagine”.  We will ask you about the location of your pain.  We will ask you for some words to describe the pain – such as when you get it, how long it lasts, and the “character” of it.  Is it shooting, stabbing, dull, or throbbing?

Our healthcare team will work together to provide the best pain relief that we can.  This may mean giving you medicine by mouth or through an IV.

There are ways to assist with pain control other than medications, such as changing your position, relaxation and breathing techniques.

You also have the right not to have specific types of pain management while you are here, if that is your choice.

PARTNERS

You are a partner in pain management.  It is your responsibility to keep us informed about any pain or discomfort you have and to ask any questions you may have regarding pain management.

YOUR SATISFACTION

Because your satisfaction with pain management is very important to us, we will ask you about your pain often.  We may even ask you about your pain control by survey once you have been discharged.

Thank you for choosing NCSH for your healthcare needs!  If there is anything we can do to make your stay more comfortable, please let us know.
