Body composition analysis provides detailed and accurate information about overall health and athletic performance. At EmergeOrtho—Triangle Region, we are known for utilizing the most advanced technology available for obtaining body composition. The Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) method of analysis, enables physicians to distinguish between lean body mass, fat mass, and bone.

In addition to DEXA body composition analysis providing the most accurate analysis of body weight, it provides valuable insight into potential development to bone health barriers such as osteopenia and osteoporosis.

DEXA Body Composition Analysis the EmergeOrtho Way

EmergeOrtho—Triangle Region utilizes the most advanced body composition analysis technology to serve our patients. No other technique can match the accuracy and precision of our Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) scans. This innovative technology, coupled with the extensive expertise of our board-certified physicians, has made us the leader in orthopedic care. Our patients benefit from this exceptional level of care delivered in a convenient, efficient and cost-effective manner.

DEXA is considered the gold standard of body composition analysis. The results from the DEXA are highly reproducible and have been validated through repeated scientific studies.

What Is Body Composition Analysis?

Body composition offers vital insights to athletes who want to achieve ideal body composition for optimum athletic performance. DEXA scans are also helpful for patients in a weight loss program or who have had bariatric surgery, as it allows the patient to track his or her progress and make adjustments as necessary.

Additionally, EmergeOrtho Bone Health specialists perform DEXA scans to diagnose and help prevent osteoporosis.

DEXA body composition analysis is often additionally recommended for those:

  • Women who are post-menopausal and do not take estrogen
  • Men who have conditions that cause bone loss (such as rheumatoid arthritis, chronic kidney or liver disease)
  • Patients that use medications associated with bone loss (such as Prednisone, Dilantin, and certain thyroid replacement medications)
  • Individuals who have a history of fractures
  • People who have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, or a family history of osteoporosis and poor bone health
  • Patients that have an X-ray revealing a fracture in the spine
  • Individuals who have a thyroid or parathyroid condition (hyperthyroidism versus hyperparathyroidism)

The scanner uses a 3D model to produce color images of the bone and the soft tissue and compiles the information into an easy-to-read report. Fat tissue mass, lean muscle mass percentage for the total body, and specific results for the arms, legs, and torso are included in the report.

What to Expect During a DEXA Body Composition Analysis

A DEXA body scan is simple and painless. Patients should wear loose-fitting clothing and avoid wearing anything metallic. Although you can eat normally the day of your exam, your doctor may advise you to abstain from taking calcium within 24 hours prior to the scan.

During a scan, patients lie on their back on the DEXA table for approximately six minutes. The scanner captures an image that will later be evaluated by our experienced professionals.
