Body Composition Analysis provides detailed and accurate information about overall health and athletic performance. Using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), we are able to distinguish between lean body mass, fat mass, and bone, therefore providing the most accurate picture of body weight.
The scanner uses a 3D model to produce color images of the bone and the soft tissue and compiles the information into an easy to read report. It gives the fat tissue mass and lean muscle mass percentage for the total body as well as the arms, legs, and torso.
This information can be used as a tool for athletes who are looking to achieve ideal body composition for optimum athletic performance. The information is also ideal for patients in a weight loss program or who have had bariatric surgery, as it allows for the patient to track their progress and make adjustments to their diet as necessary.
The results from the DEXA are highly reproducible and have been validated through repeated scientific studies. No other technique can match the accuracy and precision of a DEXA scan.
The exam is a simple, painless, non-invasive scan. The patient will lie on their backs on the DEXA table for approximately 6 minutes. The scanner will move above them and take a picture of their whole body. The radiation exposure is less than one/ twentieth of a chest x-ray, or to put this in perspective, is less than a daily dose of natural radiation exposure. You should wear loose fitting clothing with no metal and no jewelry should be worn.
Most insurances do not pay for this procedure, however, we offer individual scans at a very affordable price of $80 per scan. We can also arrange a one-on-one consultation with one of our bone health providers to go over your scan with you and discuss any questions or concerns about your health. For repeat scans to track your weight loss/training regimen progress, it is recommended to wait at least six months in-between scans.
DEXA total body composition scans are performed at our William Penn Plaza location in Durham.

"Being able to access your Orthopedic Urgent Care on a Saturday was a God-send. It was wonderful to avoid an ER. Thank you all so much for being open on Saturdays and after hours, Monday through Friday."
