The adrenal glands are located on top of each kidney and they produce hormones that regulate essential body functions. If cancer or other abnormalities develop in an adrenal gland, the gland may need to be removed. If one adrenal gland is removed, the remaining healthy gland will usually adjust and take up the functions needed to keep the body going.
Most often, adrenal surgery is performed laparoscopically, through three to four small "keyhole" incisions. Laparoscopy assists with visualization for the surgeon, and it decreases postoperative pain and recovery time for the patient. Due to the close proximity of the adrenal glands to the kidney, pancreas, spleen, and other structures, surgeon experience is important. Our surgeons at TOA Surgical Specialists have the expertise and experience necessary to offer the best in surgical care.
